Antenatal Birth Preparation

Antenatal birth preparation classes are designed to increase well-being during your pregnancy, help you bond with your baby growing within and unravel some of the mysteries surrounding birth. You may have a clear idea of how you want to give birth or you may feel undecided. The aim is to help you reduce anxieties and approach your birth with confidence; to be an active participant in the birth of your baby however the events of birth unfold.

We have lost the tradition of passing down wisdom of birth through our mothers and grandmothers. For most people nowadays images of birth often come from television and magazines. These sources are often over-dramatic or portray a narrow, prescriptive view of birth and don’t prepare you for the reality of birth and parenting.

The information covered in the classes is varied, adapting to the needs of the women who come. Birth is not a predictable event and no two births are the same, so rather than presenting you with facts we look at different aspects of pregnancy and birth, exploring the possibilities and being mindful of the need to expect the unexpected during birth. The blend of gentle yoga based exercises, information, breathing and relaxation create a holistic and practical childbirth class, helping you to feel confidently prepared.

In addition, as it can be hard to find the time in our busy lives to relax and enjoy ‘being’ pregnant. The classes give you much needed time out to focus on your pregnancy and baby; to celebrate the joy of pregnancy and having a baby and also to honour the fears each new parent has in a supportive environment.

I am mother to a lively 9 year old girl and I have held a lifelong interest in birth and babies have always been drawn to working within the realms of pregnancy and birth. I feel privileged and honoured to be doing this work and give thanks to the many parents and parents-to-be I have worked with and who inspire me to continue supporting mums, dads and babies.

I began my training with Michel Odent and Liliana Lammers in 2004 on their Paramana Doula course and went on to complete a two year course in Natural Active Birth and Parenting with Kassandra Clemens, qualifying in 2007.

Breastfeeding my daughter inspired me to train in this area too. I trained as a Mother Supporter with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers, was involved in my local breastfeeding group for a few years and used to donate breastmilk to the milk bank at Southampton hospital.

Previously I have run Steiner Parent and Toddler groups and parenting groups for mums and young babies. I also hold a degree in Psychology and have taken Reiki Master training. I am fully insured, a registered member of FEDANT registrant no 11867, Doula UK and hold an enhanced CRB disclosure.

I continue to attend various study days, courses and conferences relating to pregnancy, birth and parenting and keep up to date with research and new ideas.
